noise is a bumping noise coming from suspension/shock absorber area at rear suspension(n/s in my case) when driving on undulating and slightly bumpy roads.
It appeared after about 3/4 weeks since car was new

Can you describe this noise for me. I have a really annoying rattle coming from the rear of my car, Ive taken the parcel shelf out and the noise is still there. I get the impression from this thread that the noise in problem vehicles is more pronounced than a rattle that sounds like loose fittings.
I wonder if this will lead to a recall if they do find a problem or whether they will wait for people to complain.
Please check exhaust (back silencer) connection at left/down side of bumper. This rattling coming from a very small screw of back silencer connection. If you shake exhaust pipe by hand (pls do it when it's cold) you will hear this rattling. Solution is simple, a local workshop which is experienced in exhaust job can do a quick and easy isolation for that.Or take the car to offical Bmw garage...

I would imagine BMW would have sussed if it was a rattly exhaust by now, I think it sounds like something a little more in depth.

I just been having a poke about with my week old F20 and was able to replicate the noise from the rear suspension area. I found that with the hand break applied and a firm push on the tailgate there is a very audible squeak. However, release the hand break and apply the same pressure to the tailgate.....no squeak.

I don't know if this is quite the same issue others are experiencing but if you are surely this must be an easy fix as it's clearly something relating to the hand break acting on the discs/suspension.

All most all BMW's squeak when the hand break is on. I've had 4 and all did it

I've had my car at the dealer's garage last week. They had some tip from BMW what part(s) they should replace and they also had some measuring tool with microphones they used. They replaced the parts but they did not get rid of the noise. The car is going in to the garage next week again, they have some further ideas on what to replace/fix next, but they have to order the stuff first.

Seems to me like it is a bit of trial and error here...

Anyone heard about someone who got this fixed properly?

To be continued...

I think the noise when the handbrake is on is something different. The bumping noise we all seem to have is when travelling along without the handbrake on.

The person who refers to screws on the exhaust - can you post photos? Did a dealer diagnose this for you?

Same problem here with f20 116i...

A "bumping" noise from the rear end of the car appeared after few thousand kilometers driven. The local dealer checked the car a week ago but no solutions was found. I was told that sound is known issue and there is nothing they can do for now.

So, I'm also waiting for some kind of solutions from BMW.

Sorry for my English

the screws referred to are I think the screws holding the heat shield in the area of the back silencer box - box positioned across width of car - I checked under my car and if you force the box upwards it can touch on one of the screws, similarly with tail pipe this can touch bodywork with force applied.
The noise referred to is not related to these it is a suspension/shock absorber /rear subframe problem - garage advises me they await further info regarding their PUMA raised and are also of the impression that tests are being carried out either Bracknell and/or Germany to establish problem/cure.
I will advise on anything further as I know.

I have just bought a new F20 120d Sport, not only has it got that annoying banging noise at the rear of the car but the ride is quite appalling. The rear end actually bounces quite severely as the suspension seems almost solid. I test drove a 1.8 with 16 inch tyres and this did not have the problem. The 17 inch wheels on the Sport may well be the cause of the dreadful ride and may initiate the "banging" but are not the cause.

Mine is fine, doesn't bang or bounce? What suspension set up do you have and what tyre make?

My 116i Sport went into the dealers yesterday morning to have the auto aircon replaced and this phantom noise at the rear looked at.

I collected it this morning, aircon fixed but noise not. Service dept advised me that they sent something to BMW and they got a reply this morning stating that the noise is a characteristic of the F20. However the service dude admitted that his works F20 and others had this noise and he said that he thought it was a defect....as do the rest of us!!!

As with other posts...the only update I am able to offer is that BMW are working on resolving the issue so watch this space. At least my dealer has admitted that there is a defect in thier eyes.

I cannot believe that BMW are saying it is a characteristic of the car though, nutters. I wouldn't spend a shiz load of money for a knocking noise.

Hopefully they find a solution very soon because the noise is driving me insanse!!!!

All very interesting guys. I've been really patient waiting for a solution to the muffled banging / knocking from the rear. I'm alarmed to hear a suggestion that it's somehow normal. Hatchbacks costing half the price don't knock at the rear when driving along, and the 1 Series certainly should not in my view. My patience is beginning to slip! Has anyone heard that this is going to be a recall and a fix or are we expected to go on driving around with a knocking rear end and if so for how long?

hi, i had same problem with this annoying noise, but since i changed my 16 inch winter wheels for 17 inch summer wheels (225/45/17) last weekend the noise suddenly disappeared. I have 118i engine.
Are u using Run On Flat tyres on your 17 inch summer wheels or ?
Yes, both sets of tyres are Run On Flat and including wheels are bought from BMW. I have no idea how or why the noise disappeared, 'cos i did nothing else. I hope it helps somehow.
